Versatility is not the number of theoretical outfits a garment can enter. It is the number of real contexts in which you would choose to wear it. A charcoal, softly constructed jacket earns its place because it can change register without changing identity.
Work: keep the line clean
Pair it with a pale blue shirt, mid-grey trousers and dark brown derbies. The colours are familiar, so fit and texture carry the outfit. Leave the tie at home unless the room expects one.
Evening: replace the shirt with knitwear
A cream or black knit polo removes office associations while keeping the collar line composed. Dark trousers and loafers are enough; a pocket square would add noise rather than purpose.
Weekend: separate the textures
Use dark straight denim, a grey T-shirt and suede shoes. The jacket should be soft enough that this does not look like a suit coat borrowed from Monday.
The same garment works because the construction is quiet, the colour is neutral and the supporting pieces communicate the setting. That is a more durable definition of versatility than a list of seasonal trends.
